Season Ahead 2019-20

As we enjoy the recent outbreak of sun and the summer weather, attention now turns to next season.

Both senior teams enjoyed a degree of success compared to previous seasons and the youth team showed that the future is definitely bright at Abercynon RFC. In order to build on the successes of last season, the club have been fortunate to maintain the same first team set up of Dai Owen and James Read, coaching and Grant Eynon as team manager. The club had no hesitation in requesting their services again after taking the team from the foot of the table to finish 5th, with some great rugby played throughout last season.  Happily the boys felt the same way and we look forward to working with them again this season.  There is also an addition to the setup with the well respected player and former coach, Gareth Turner, who will be responsible for the fitness and conditioning of the teams.

The 2nd team squad have received a massive boost, with last years youth coaches, Gareth Jones and Jamie Price, taking over the reins. Having developed many of the youth team during their 3 year tenure, both are excited to continue that progression into the 2nd and 1st teams respectively. The boys will be supported by the ever present Dylan Cooper, Dan Davies and last seasons captain Michael ‘gummy’ Watkins in his changed role as Team Manager. His captains armband will be handed over to Gavin Moses, who having just gained his club cap, will work hard to encourage players to do well and bridge the gap from youth to senior rugby.

The youth team will feel a degree of loss, having seen their coaches move en masse. However with Michael  ‘shiner’ Sheehan stepping up his refereeing development into championship games, and Jones/Price taking over with the 2nd team, a wealth of experience is coming their way.  Former players Ray Phillips, Chris King and Andrew Lane will be responsible for moulding the forwards into a hard edged unit, while Ben Brakespear and Neil Coxsley will take care of the backs. Darren Kathrens completes the set-up, as team manager.

2018-2019 was a big step forward for the club after a few lean and worrying seasons. However, the committee, coaching team, players and supporters all look at 2019-2020 with genuine optimism.

Pre season training starts tomorrow at 11am all old and new players welcome.

Here’s to the new season!!
