Walter Barnes

It is with deep regret that we learned of the passing of one of Abercynon RFCs most stalwart supporters, WALTER BARNES. Walter, a carpenter by trade, recently succumbed to a long standing illness just a few weeks short of his 82nd birthday. Whilst he will no longer be with us, his legacy, the fine building that is our Clubhouse is a permanent reminder of his expertise and workmanship. Completed in 1985, Walter and his business colleague Bill Talbot delivered the building on time and on budget. However, Walter’s involvement with the Club goes back much further as he too, along with Bill Talbot, was responsible for carrying out the conversion work when our original clubhouse was opened in Margaret Street in 1969. Additionally, Walter was very much a hands-on participant during the club’s endeavours to raise the capital to realise the ambition of having its own headquarters. Walter Barnes may not have kicked or passed a rugby ball for Abercynon RFC but his contribution to the cause over many years has been immeasurable. This Club has indeed lost a loyal servant and we would like to pass on our condolences to Walter’s family and friends.

Walter’s funeral will take place at 1:15 pm on Friday 16th June at Llwydcoed Crematorium. Afterwards, refreshments will be served at the Rugby Club.
