Abercynon RFC are delighted to confirm their coaching set-up for the 2024/25 Division 1 East Central and Conference league campaigns.
Sam Evans, fowards coach since 2022, is set to take on a more senior role and will be joined by our outside half Dean Gunter who will coach the backs. Former first team captain Geraint Turner will return to the club to take up the Team Manager's role.
Club stalwart Christopher Keepings and Dean Page will take charge of coaching our development squad who will likely return to the East Blue Conference league in the Autumn. Dylan Cooper will become 2nd team manager.
Sam Evans said: "I am very pleased once again to be announced as forwards coach for Abercynon, my fourth season with the club. It's great to have Dean [Gunter] working alongside me as he'll bring a vast amount of knowledge and experience that will be vital for us moving forward. We believe Geraint Turner is the perfect fit for the Team Manager's role and we're looking forward to working with him.
"In terms of the seconds, I have full confidence that Chris, Dean [Page], and Dylan will guide them to another successful season and get the players ready for first team rugby!"
"Reflecting on last season and our goals for promotion, it was naturally frustrating that things did not work out with the way we planned - but it makes me more excited and hungry to aim for the top, knowing what our group of players are capable of."
Dean Gunter said: "After being back at Abercynon, my childhood club, for the last two seasons, I'm looking forward to taking on the challenge of coaching the boys and sharing the knowledge and wisdom I've picked up through over two decades of playing.
"I'm looking forward to working with my cousin Sam to hopefully take this squad onto bigger and even better things, and also with Geraint Turner, a player I looked up to in my younger days.
"I'd like to personally thank our outgoing coaches David Owen and James Read for everything they have done for the club and also for me personally. I look forward to carrying on their fantastic work."
Christopher Keepings said: “Moving into a coaching role after playing for so many years is something that I'm really looking forward to. It gives me a lot of satisfaction to get the opportunity to put a bit back into the club I've represented for many years. The seconds have grown and shown lots of resillance over the past few years, which is mostly thanks to Gareth Jones. I’m excited for the new season and challenges it’s brings. YMLAEN!”
The committee would like to extend their gratitude to our outgoing coaches and team managers for their tremendous service over the years.
