The recent passing of former player Mark Smith has saddened those who knew him and played alongside him here at Abercynon RFC.

Mark or ‘Zak’ as he was more colloquially known, played for Abercynon RFC from the end of the seventies until the mid-eighties. He was a very competitive second or back row player and made a try-scoring 2nd XV debut in September 1979.

Over a five year period, he frequently featured in both the second and first teams and relished the close quarter confrontations of the playing positions he occupied. In his later years, Mark’s health suffered after he was dealt a severe life-changing injury while at work.

Abercynon RFC wish to pass on their condolences to Mark’s wife Sara, his son Lewis and partner Suzanne, their children Samuel and Sophie: his daughter Llinos and husband Andrew, their children Maggie, Rosa and Eliza: his daughter Nerys and her children Ioan and Eirys.

The funeral of Mark Smith / Zak will be held on Thursday the 28th of September. He will be leaving the house at 10.30 am and the service will be held in Llwycoed Crematorium at 11.15 am. All are welcome to join to celebrate his life. The wake will then be held in the Abercynon Rugby Club clubhouse.
