Gordon Williams - A tribute

Gordon Williams was a man of vision.

His recent passing, whilst extremely sad, has served to remind everyone that it is not by mere coincidence that Abercynon RFC enjoy outstanding playing and social facilities - but are the direct result of decisions and efforts made by a number of driven individuals.

The prime mover among these, was a certain Gordon H Williams. Known as Gudge to many, he presided as Club Secretary for nigh on 30 years. During this period Gordon oversaw the transformation of the playing area. In 1981: the installation of floodlights, in 1984: the building of the stand, in 1996: the construction of spectator terracing, a footbridge, plus other improvements including the enclosing of the ground.

However, the icing on the cake was the building of the clubhouse at Y Parc, which was officially opened in 1985. It was not an easy decision to make to leave the then current clubhouse in the town as there were a number of detractors. Gordon though, with his usual confident style carried the day and the move was made.

It should also be noted that Gordon played at scrum half for the Club during the 1970s before becoming secretary of the Mid District Rugby Union and then representing them on the WRU. With Gordon’s passing,  it is indeed the end of an era. Abercynon RFC will be forever grateful for his presence here and thankful for his wonderful legacy that we all share.

On behalf of Abercynon RFC, we wish to offer our condolences to Gordon’s wife Anne, his children Christopher, Emma, Joanne, his grandson Ellis, his brother David, and their respective families and friends.

Thank you, Gareth Withey, for kindly and aptly reminding us of Gordon’s important contribution and legacy that generations have and will enjoy. Gordon was a very intelligent, friendly, and humble gentleman and a selfless servant of Abercynon Rugby Club. Ymlaen!
