As a talented player, captain, committee-man and long-time Chairman of Abercynon RFC, Ray Adams was all of these and more. Sadly, after battling a long illness and nearing his 85 birthday, he recently passed away. Commencing his Abercynon career during the 1950’s, Ray, who played at full back, captained the side in the 1961-62 season. At the end of his playing days Ray became chairman and in 1969 oversaw the opening of Cynon’s new clubhouse in Margaret Street and also the custom-built current headquarters in 1985. During his long tenure as chairman, success on the playing field proliferated, with the team’s winning of the Glamorgan County Silver Ball in 1973 being among the first of many proud moments for a man who was at the helm during the club’s many successes. Throughout his life Ray was a man infused with a strong sense of humour and his philosophical approach to almost everything made him an engaging personality. Despite his lack of mobility in latter years those qualities prevailed until the end. All at Abercynon RFC wish to offer their sincere condolences to Ray's wife Kay, children Claire, Ian and Steven together with their respective families. Gareth Withey. Ray’s funeral will take place at Llwydcoed Crematorium at 11-15am on Thursday 17th May. Afterwards, refreshments will be served at Abercynon Rugby Club. Family flowers only but donations can be made in lieu to Parkinson’s Disease Research.

Great man, Ray always had good advice for many a ‘hot headed’ teenage rugby player, moreover was pivotal in many things that progressed Abercynon R.F.C. to what it is today. Sincere condolences to Ian and family. Kevin Jones
